Kenya, 1978. President Jomo Kenyatta dies in office, and Vice President Daniel arap Moi ascends to the presidency. The country's first transfer of power since independence.Four years later, on the morning of August 1, 1982, Leonard Mambo Mbotela — the most trusted radio voice in Kenya, is dragged from his home by soldiers before dawn. He is driven to the Voice of Kenya broadcasting house, where Hezekiah Ochuka, the charismatic and volatile leader of a military coup, forces him to announce on air that Moi's government has fallen.Held inside the station as the coup unfolds, Mbotela becomes both hostage and confidant to Ochuka, who is fascinated by the trust Mbotela commands and needles him with questions about where real power lies — in the gun, or in the voice a nation chooses to believe. Mbotela survives by giving Ochuka just enough, without ever fully surrendering to him.Outside, the coup collapses within hours. Loyalist forces led by Major General Mahamoud Mohamed retake the station, and Mbotela is placed back behind the same microphone — this time to tell the country the government still stands. Order is restored. He returns home to his wife, undone by what the day has cost him.Ochuka is later captured, tried for treason, and executed, along with several of his co-conspirators — the last time Kenya carries out a death sentence. Mbotela goes on to a long career as the country's most enduring broadcasting voice, remembered for the two announcements that, in a single day, shook a nation and then steadied it.
